what would happen if you were caught in the underground railway? Since the underground railway was illegal they would be flogged, branded, pot in jail, sold back into slavery or even killed for just wanting to have rights and wanting to have a regular life.
You might wonder what flogged means.it means when someone is beat up with a whip or stick as punishment or even torture.
you probably wonder what branded means it means when someone puts a boiling hot piece of metal on someone that prints some word or shape on a person.
what is slavery?
slavery was when an person owns someone else even though it is not fare and the slave will have to work for them there entire life even if they do not want to do that.

what caused the underground railroad was that black people were being treated unfairly just because they had a different kind of skin and the slaves were tired of this so they escaped some white people helped as well. a family of slaves could be living together and the next living apart and never seeing their family again.

The Elgin settlement
The settlement began in 1849 and its first school opened a year later. Reverend king provided land cheaply and in exchange for a promise to clear the land and build houses. within five years a settlement was thriving with over 300 families as well as farms and sawmills. women were important to the success of the settlement. they organized events, made the schools and churches and helped others come to the community.

The Elgin settlement is now known as buxton and is the centre of an annual celebration of black heritage.
