CLIMATE CHANGE SITUATION
USA
LEVELS OF EMISSIONS
US is the world's second largest emitter of greenhouse gases, however, its per capita emissions aren't very high. They have resorted to renewable energy sources instead of coal.
LEVELS OF VULNERABILITY
It is a HIC so it can easily make large scale efforts to reduce GHG emissions. However, it is very geographically sensitive especially towards the South as it gets hit by hurricanes experiencing sea level rise.
RESPONSE
GOVERNMENT
Trump reversed all of Obama's efforts by withdrawing from the Paris agreement, he promoted mining and drilling in oceans and reduced environmental sustainability budgets. Joe Biden has made America a part of the Paris agreement and takes environmental concerns more seriously.
CIVIL SOCIETY
Protests for environment related crisis like the fridays for future movements, protests against the Willow project, mainly since the U.S is a democratic country.
MALDIVES
RESPONSE
GOVERNMENT
The government promises to move 20,000 foreigners and locals to a floating city by 2024.
They banned single use plastic in 2023 and will have zero emissions by 2030.
CIVIL SOCIETY
The youth from different islands all come up with different ideas to preserve their islands and protect them from CC damage.
LEVELS OF VULNERABILITY
Most vulnerable geographically as it is made of a bunch of small islands which are all at a threat of sinking due to sea level rise. Events like storm surges and floods of the smallest scales can bring large scale damage to properties since the water level is very close to the city.
-
CHINA
RESPONSE
GOVERNMENT
Reach carbon neutrality by 2060.
Invest in renewable energy.
Coal power plants are still booming in the country
-
LEVELS OF VULNERABILITY
Coastal regions, notably Shanghai could be underwater if sea level rises at current rates.
Changes in rain patterns can bring along food and water scarcity amd also be more vulnerable to river floods.
-
KENYA
RESPONSE
GOVERNMENT
They have an ideology of responding to situations rather than to stop it. They mainly provide food aid to affected areas and have little influence nation wide.
CIVIL SOCIETY
There are many private organisations in the country that make an effort to preserve the environment, notably the once acre fund which will work with 200,000 farmers to make agriculture sustainable
LEVELS OF VULNERABILITY
50% of Kenya's GDP is contributed by agriculture and is the major source of income for 80% of the rural population. Poor and high dense areas like Kibera which has over 250,000 people are affected largely during disease
outbreaks like malaria which come due to very warm conditions.
LEVELS OF EMISSIONS
In 2020, they emitted 0.3 metric tones of CO2 per capita.
They have reduced CO2 emissions by 2 million tones.
Most of their emissions come from cattle.
