Immune Response, Internal Barriers - Coggle Diagram
Immune Response
Innate Immune Response
(Nonspecific 1st Line of Defense)
1st Defense=Barriers
External Barriers
Skin, mucous membranes, etc
Keep Invaders OUT
2nd Defense= Internal Signals and Killers
Phagocytes
Large eater cells that gobble up antigens and foreign particles
Neutrophils
Take in invader cells and self destruct
Inflammatory Response
Red, Swollen, hot, painful symptoms to promote healing. Brings in nutrients and phagocytes
Natural Killer Cells
Promote cell death (apoptosis) in invaders via lysis (popping)
Adaptive Immune Response
(Slow. Specific. Discriminate. Powerful)
Humoral Immunity
Primary Response (Initial Exposure)
B Lymphocyte
Contains cell membrane receptors to identify and bind to antigens
Creates additional copies of self when exposed to an antigen
Secondary Response (Second Exposure)
B Lymphocyte
Effector Cells
Mass produce antibodies to bind, neutralize, and signal phagocytes
Memory Cells
Produce chemicals/signals to quickly combat future infections they've already been exposed to
Internal Barriers
Stomach acid, saliva, internal mucous, enzymes, etc
Kill, prevent invaders indiscriminately
