once a tropical storm has started to form, warm moist air rises to be replaced by air drawn in by the centre. A central vortex will develop as more and more air is drawn in and rises.
The very centre of the storm is categorised by a column of dry sinking air, as the air rises it rapidly cools and leads to condensation and towering clouds, when condensation occurs, latent heat is released which powers the storm, as it reaches land it looses its energy supply - if it moved back over the ocean it would be invigorated
Storms are measured on the saffir-simpson scale which is based on wind speed, the saffir simpson scale also estimatrtes the amount of damage there is
