Bertha is a mysterious character who is kept secret from reader and Jane for a large part of the novel. Even after she's revealed the reader can't be sure of Bertha's character and next actions.
The reader knows she is unpredictable and can be violent - in addition to the strange laughs and noises, Bertha sets fire to Mr Rochester's bed, attacks Mr Mason at night and rips Jane's wedding veil in the night.
