The Crucible
Hysteria
period of intense paranoia and fear resulting in execution of 20 people accused of witchcraft --> dangerous consequences of
false accusation
characters in "the crucible" are easy to believe any rumour without any evidence --> many members of the community believed (including the position of authority)
-
as the accusation expand, the hysteria grows and the community keeps dividing
Abigail Williams is the main hysteria character in this play
--> she accuses other for witchcraft in order to deflect attention from her suspicious behaviour
--> in order to have power over others
--> can be manipulated by figures in power (e.g. Abigail) --
--> Reverend Parris uses hysteria to increase his authority and to maintain control over the community
Tears apart tight knit community, disables all logic and thoughts and enables people to believe that their closest friend could have committed horrible acts
Townsfolks acceptance of hysterical climate, it gives them a reason to act on long-held grudges
Abby & Elizabeth Proctor, Abby uses hysteria to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft and have her sentenced.
panic in town thrives, only because the folk in Salem enable it, and benefit from it, which allows the chaos to brew under the cover of righteousness
Goodness
-
-
-
Abigail confessing to seeing witchcraft, in pursuit of being seen as 'good' by community of salem
John Proctor struggling with 'goodness': deciding not to testify against abby's accusations early on in the play, in the end signing a false confession --> deciding to rip it up and die without accusing other innocent people
Leaving his name untarnished, with goodness and integrity in touch
Reputation
-
-
Testifying
Proctor deciding not to testify against Abigail’s accusations, in order to keep his reputation clean and untarnished
-
Not testifying is not better, because you were either seen as not patriotic (as a communist), or in the witch trials as a witch and not christian

-
Power

Act One on Page 28
John Proctor says “We vote by name in this society, not by acreage.”
-
Power is shown by the judges, who are
abusing their power by doing unfair court cases and punishing innocent people with the death penalty.
Miller wants to show us the danger of people who are manipulating the justice system so that they can have it for their own gain.
