TREATIES
-
-
any amending Treaty such as the Treaty on EU 1992 which introduced provisions for a shared European citizenship
-
law contained in the Treaties was directly applicable and did not need an Act of Parliament to make then into UK law - not only made EU law part of UK law but also allowed individuals to rely on it - DIRECT EFFECT
while the UK was a member of the EU, any Treaty made by the EU automatically became a part of UK law and could be relied on by individual citizens - applied to all MS
DIRECTIVES
-
-
directives are not directly effective so they cannot be relied on by an individual until they have been enacted by domestic laws - if a MS fails to implement a directive within the time given, an individual can take the MS to court for non-implementation

REGULATIONS
under Article 288 TFEU, the EU has the power to issue EU regulations which are 'binding in every respect and directly applicable in each MS' - these laws will be made by the Council
such regulations do not have to be adopted in any way by the the individual states as they automatically become law in each MS
they are DIRECTLY APPLICABLE in the same way as treaties - prevents MS from picking and choosing regulations they implement - laws therefore are UNIFORM across all MS
