Monitoring Behaviour

Censorship and The Internet

Risks

Monitoring becomes intrusive for example, employers tracking data usage at work as well as emails.

People can be monitored for the wrong reasons i.e tracking the employees habits and internet searches.

Can be taken too far as forced tracking e.g. a tagging bracelet would mean 24/7 monitoring of the individual.

Censorship

The Internet

Opportunities

Passive monitoring is a way to monitor behaviour without the need to be intrusive however, there can be forced tracking.

Help catch criminals as those who commit crime on camera can be caught.

Reduces crime as those who try to commit crime would be deterred by CCTV for example.

"Any act that results in the deliberate suppression of materials in terms of what can be published or accessed."

Many schools and businesses use filtering software to censor or restrict access to content they feel is inappropriate or distracting for students to be accessing during the school or working day; as a part of its duty of care, a school has a moral – and more importantly, legal - obligation to safeguard its students by blocking access to inappropriate material. This kind of censorship is not an area of great debate since we choose our school or job – and in doing so, their policies.

In the UK, the government requires ISPs to block sites that contain the following:

Extremist Polotics

Extreme Pornography

Copyright Infringement and File Sharing

Of course, not every country has the same level of censorship – where to draw the line between protecting the public and infringing on their freedom of speech and human rights is a grey area; the UK ranked 35 in the World Press freedom of expression index 2020.
