Living together :red_flag::+1:
What is an organism :check:
An organism is a living thing
what is a population :check:
A population consist of organisms of the
same kind
that live and reproduce in a particular place
duckweed plants in a duckweed pond form a duckweed population
Caterpillar, pupae and adults make up the butterfly population in a garden
Population size is the total number of live organisms including
both young and adult
Population increases when organisms reproduce or move into the surroundings
Population decreases when organisms die, migrate or move away, birth rate drops and affected by a disease
What is a habitat :check:
Habitat is a place where organisms live
where organisms can find
air, food, water, space and shelter
Many kinds of habitat, such as
rotting log, forest, pond, heap of leaves
In the same habitat, there are
more than one population
Different habitats have different living conditions
Habitats can be natural or artificial
artificial habitat examples
zoos, aquariums, terrariums, herbariums or cages
How are populations in a habitat
interdependent
:
Some organisms depend on one another for survival, or completing their life cycle.
Animal population depend on the plant population for shelter, place to lay eggs, food and oxygen which plants produced
Plants need animals to pollinate flowers and disperse seeds
Animal waste enriches soil with nutrients
What is a community and what are the type of communites
A community consists of
different populations of organisms
which are interdependent on each other
Different communities can be found in different habitats
Each type of habitat (e.g. forest habitat) may support different communitites depending on location, size and the amount of water and food
Seashore, Mangrove Swamp, Pond, Field, Garden, Single plant, leaf litter, forest, Rotting log communities
Fungi and bacteria decompose dead living things
The type of organisms living in a commuunity will depend on the presence of light, temperature, air, water, food, and other organisms
Features of the diff. types of communities
Single Plant Community
Can serve as a habitat for other animals
tree is a habitat for fern, ants, birds and squirrels
Garden Community (at home or at school)
leaf litter community might be part of this
Garden community consists of bacteria, plant, fungi and animal populations
Field Community
dog and cats come here to :poop: but they are not part of the community as it does not live here
Field community consists of plant, bacteria, fungi, other micro organisms and animal populations
leaf litter community might be part of this
Pond Community
Aquatic habitat
Floating plant, partially submerged plant and totally submerged plant (Tab-P178)
Animals living near the pond, on pond surface and in the pond
Some pond communities also include plants and animals
Mangrove Swamp Community
Muddy areas when tide comes in, often found near river bodies
Plants in mangrove swamp community have
special roots
that survive flooding by seawater, also help provide support in soft mud.
Animals
such as frogs, prawns, crabs, snakes, crocodiles and mudskippers
Seashore Community
Tab-P176
Land near sea, have sandy soil and/or large rocks
At high tide, the seashore is flooded with seawater
Animal population
such as crab, starfish, mussel
Plants poulation
such as turtle grass, bushy pondweed and mosses
Leaf Litter Community
made of fallenn leaves, bits of bark and dead plant matter
made out of leaf litter and soil
popular habitat as is food for bacteria, fungi and some animals and other organisms can feed on it
Rotting Log Community
A log that is still digested by a rotting log
bacteria decompose it for nutrients
Forest Community
trees, ferns, mosses, large and small mammals, insects and reptiles
some smaller communties that interact with each other
What is an environment
organisms affected by its surroundings
How do the non-living factors in an environment affect the living things?
availablity of food affect survival of organism, light allows plants to photosynthesis and make food, other organisms directly or indirectly affect from the plant
organisms harm or help each other, decomposers feed on decaying matter
How do the living factors in an environment affect the living things
amount of light, temperature, amount of air, water, soil, amount of food
