Lymphatic system - Coggle Diagram
Lymphatic system
Structure of the lymphatic system
Lymphatic vessels
Accompany venous blood vessels throughout the body and form extensive network
Pick up lymph and transport it towards the heart
Contains valves to prevent backflow of lymph
Lymphatic vessels
:Lymph flows towards the heart through larger lymphatic vessels till it reaches the large lymphatic ducts
Lymp is pushed towards to heart as skeletal muscle contract squeezing the lymphatic vessel
Lymph
Colourless and clear
Tissue fluid entering the lymphatic vessels is the lymph
Around 21 litres of fluid from plasma escape into tissues
Lymphoid tissues
Lymph nodes
Tonsils
Lymph nodes in throat area
Filter tissue fluid contaminated by pathogens that enter the body through the nose and mouth
Lymphoid organs
Thymus gland
Located at a part of the chest
Plays a cruical role in the development of the immune system before birth and the first few months of birth
After puberty, the gland shrinks and remain inactive throughout life
Secretes hormone, Thymosin promotes reproduction & maturation of special lymphocyte in lymphoid tissues throughout the body (MCQ)
Spleen
Largest lymphoid organ in the body (MCQ)
Located in the left upper quadrant of the
abdominal cavity
Function (MCQ & SAQ)
Filter and clean blood
Storage of blood
Destroy worn-out RBCs
Contain T & B lymphocyte to fight infection
Lymph nodes
Small pea-shaped patches
Produce and store lymphocyte
Appears in clusters
Cervial lymph nodes
Axillary lymph nodes
Inguinsl lymph nodes
Filter the lymph as it flows through the lymphatic vessels
Function
Assist in fat absorption in small intestine
Prevents oedema
Lymphatic vessels return tissue fluid to the blood
Lymphoid tissue protect body against diseases
Filter particles e.g pathogens & cancer cells
Lymphatic ducts
Right lymphatic duct
Dilated lymph vessel
Lies in the root of neck
Opens into right subclavian vein
Drains lymph from right half of thorax \, head and neck and right arm
Located at Right upper body
Thoracic duct
Begins at the cisterna chyli (dilated lymph channel)
40cm long
Opens into left subclavian vein
Drains from
left upper body
