BACKGROUND TO THE SOVIET REVOLUTION
Tsarist Russia
At the beginning of the 20th century
The Russian Empire had around 150 million inhabitants
The population was very unevenly distributed
Consisted of a great diversity of nationalities, peoples and cultures.
The economy, based on agriculture, was slowly beginning to develop industrially
The general standard of living was low and poverty was widespread
Russia was an autocratic monarchy

The sovereign was backed by a feudal aristocracy

The Marxist-inspired Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party was also founded
The working class should carry out a revolution to eliminate injustice and inequality
Two groups
