A DECLINE IN CONFIDENCE, 1968-80
THE MEDIA
People had much more access to media than before, so it became increasingly important for the Presidency and how the public views the govt.
From the 1950s the media became increasingly critical of the administrations dealings of foreign policy.
From 1968, the media saw their job as uncovering govt deception.

ROLE OF SOCIAL FACTORS
The level of violence associated with protests escalated (from protestors and law enforcement) . E.g. riots in cities following MLK's death.
Police became more violent with student protestors, too:
e.g. 1970- National guard killed 4 students at Kent State University during an anti-war protest.
Many white MC Americans became disillusioned with 'liberal thinking', they began to feel that the govt was doing too much to help the poor and not enough for them.
