  1. Video messaging
  • Differs from VoIP in that it is not a medium for discussions, but one in which you send a contact a short video instead of text.

a. Glide

  • Used to send fast videos to groups or individuals with no uploading or downloading required.
  • User can chat in groups as well as send and receive videos and text.
  • Available in the Apps Store and Google Play Store.

b. Samba

  • One step further; it automatically records the recipient's reaction to the video on the phone's front-facing camera.
  • Samba is only available for iOS.
  1. Web conferencing
  • Generally used by businesses for meetings, training events or to relay other information to people in a remote location.
  • A monthly fee is usually required to use the software.
  • Participants can provide feedback to the moderator or chat with the room or an individual and make notes.

a. Adobe Connect

  • Used to create information and general presentations, online training materials, web conferencing, learning modules and user desktop sharing.
  • All meeting room are organized into 'pods'; with each pod performing a specific role.

  • The old standby of regular email is still a heavily used communication tool, so a good email client is essential.
  • Most of emailing software works on any IMAP or POP account, allowing users to consolidate their mail into one place.

Client based

Advantages

  • Can store as much email on your computer as you want and save it for as long as you would like.
  • The only limit is the size of your hard drive.
  • Able to read, write and reply to email while you are off-line.
  • Enabling users to easily sort, organize and coordinate with corresponding calendars.

Disadvantages

  • You can only check your email from a computer that has an email-client configured for your account.

Web based

Advantages

  • You can access it from any computer in the world that has an Internet connection.
  • No special email client software is necessary to install.

Disadvantages

  • Web-based email usually limits the amount of email messages you can store on the server.
  1. Software as a Service (Saas)
  • SaaS is an alternative way in accessing software instead of traditional way.
  • SaaS refers to a subscription based model where the software is hosted in the cloud and accessed via the Internet.

Difference between Traditional Software and SaaS

Traditional software

  • Users need to purchase the software and install onto their computer with high price.
  • Licenses maybe limited to numbers of users.

SaaS

  • Monthly basis subscription, no upfront payment.
  • Users may end their subscription at any time.
  • The software is always updated.
  • Does not required storage space in computer because it stores in cloud.

  • Accessible from any location
  • No initial cost setup
