Application Step of Inductive Bible Study
Importance of Application
it is the nature of the spiritual life
the purpose of the Scripture is to change men
it is the efficacy of the Scriptures - it is relevant and practical
Problem with Application
Direct or Indirect?
generally, the teachings of the epistles more directly apply to us
generally, the narratives and the Old Testament more indirectly apply
2 steps to determine which it is
context
the context itself may tell you it is obviously not mean to be applied
the author may himself limit the application by addressing it to a limited group
an obvious requirement of history and culture may limit the application
additional revelation
subsequent revelation may limit the application of some Sciptures
Process of Application
an attitude of dependence on God
know yourself
be honest about your strengths and weaknesses
be open to the perspectives of others
be teachable
climbing the abstraction ladder
determine the original applications intended by the passages
evaluate the level of specificity of the original applications
Does the text present a broad theological or moral principle or does it give a specfic manifestation of such a principle, which Scripture elsewhere embodies in one or more different forms?
Does the context of the book in which the passage appears or of additional revelation limit the application in any way or does it promote a more universal application?
Is the particular form expressed in the Biblical text present today, and if so does it have the same significance as then?
Is the rationale of the application rooted in a creation ordinance, in the character of God, or in part of His redemptive plan for humanity?
is the command or application at variance with standard cultural norms of today?
if the applications are not directly applicable, identify one or more broader cross-cultural principles that the specific elements of the text reflect.
