DEFINITIONS
RISK
actual danger from a tectonic event - can very depending on a number of factors
VULNERABILITY
measure of someones inability to cope with, or recover from a disaster
HAZARD
natural event that threatens or causes injury, death, and/or damage
DISASTER
result of a hazard seriously disrupting the functioning of a vulnerable community causing loss of life and economic damage
ECONOMIC
HICs
less vulnerable
greater ability to evacuate
better technology, can monitor hazards and issue warnings
better built buildings - can afford earthquake resistant materials
people are proactive - Predict, Protect, Prepare
LICs
lack of education and knoledge
poor quality buildings, higher risk of collapse
poor technology to monitor or issue warnings
less likely to have insurance - limited ability to cope with aftermath - emotional loss as can't get things back
SOCIAL
POPULATION
more people = greater potential loss of life
YOUNG AND ELDERLY
have less physical strength
more suceptable to disease
are dependant
WOMEN
lack of education, especially in LICs
lack of finance
they have a role of protecting others
gender inequality increases vulnerability
POORLY EDUCATED
less knowledge on what to do during a hazard
PERCEPTION
acceptance
complacency (from false alarms)
fear of the unknown
POLITICAL
poor quality governance = higher vulnerability
LACK OF DEVELOPMENT
more likely for buildings to collapse
CORRUPTION
prevent aid and rescue from other countries
LACK OF PLANNING
people will be unsure of what to do
higher death toll
EXAMPLE
Nepal 2015 - building standards ignored, no aid - 9,000 people killed
GEOGRAPHICAL
LOCATION
urban = higher population density, more vulnerable to loss
rural = remote, difficulties of rescue and aid
example: Nepal - roads cut off, no aid to some areas
TIME
rush hours = more vulnerable, people out and about
night time = vulnerable, people crushed while asleep
winter = vulnerable, no shelter, no food and water
