League of Nations - SUMMARY
Birth of the LON
It was created according to one of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, with the idea of having and organisation that could stop international conflicts, before they resulted in war.
At first they disagreed on how the organisation should work.
In the end, it was the idea of a world parliament (presented by Wilson) which won.
Aims of the LON
Discourage aggresion from any nation.
Encourage co-operation between countries.
Encourage disarment.
Improve living and working conditions all over the world.
MOST IMPORTANT: ACHIEVING AND MANTAINING WORLD PEACE

Organisation of the LON
The Council
Smaller group that met more often. It's main aim was to resolve disputes by talking.
Powers: Moral Condemnation, Economic and financial sanctions, Military force.

The Secretariat
Civil service
Records the League meetings and prepares reports.
Bring together experts from all around the world.
Health.
Disarmament.
Economic matters.
The Permanent Court of International Justice
Made up of judges from the member countries.
Settles disputes between countries peacefully.
Take decisions regarding border disputes.
They couldn't be sure that coutries followed their rules.
The Assembly
A sort of Parliament conformed by a representative from each country in the League. Met once a year. Decisions had to be unanimous.
Had to recommend action to the Council and were in charge of admmiting new members.
The International Labour Organization (ILO)
People who participated in it were employers, governments, and worker's representatives.
They wanted to improve working conditions around the world based on related statistics and information, and convinced countries to adopt their suggestions.
The League of Nations Agencies and Commissions
The Mandates Commissions
Report to the League how people in the mandates were being treated.
The Refugees Committe
Helped refugees that tried to get back to their homes or didn't have any home to go.
The Slavery Commission
Worked to abolish slavery.
The Health Committee
Deal with dangerous diseases, looked for rapid developments in medicine and educated people about health and sanitation.
Isolationism
Not get involved in international alliances.
Follow its own policies.
Self-interest.
Slogan: 'Return to normalcy'.
Life as it was before the war.
Applied by the republican candidate, Warren Harding.
Isolate USA from Europe.
They won the elections.
USA didn't join the League.
