Sixties Scoop
Short-term consequences
Emotional Struggles
People are disconnected from their families and as a result they feel shameful about themselves and disconnected from their culture
April struggles to find her real cultural identity. She hates being Indigenous and this is because she has been disconnected from the Indigenous culture for most of her life: "Oh, sure, April, and when you run out o money in the city, you can just sell your body. And what else do native girls do" (Culleton 79).

Immediate Trauma
Being pulled away from parents and family creates a sense of fright and confusion for children. This becomes a traumatic event for these kids at such a young age. The experiences faced at the foster homes are more long term trauma but this separation is more immediate and felt right away
Hard time fitting in
Indigenous kids were often put into non-Indigenous homes and as a result they had a hard time fitting in because they had to learn a new language and adapt to their culture and practices.
Improper Education
Indigenous students often got poor quality education. This has kind of been fixed because of the different acts in the TRC but during the Sixties Scoop, it was a major issue.
For example, Calls to Action 6-12 (the education sector) and Calls to Action 1-5 (Child Welfare) help Indigenous Peoples have equal access to education. This is recent but during the Sixties Scoop era, this was not the case as the TRC did not exist.
Physical Abuse
Indigenous children were often treated poorly at these homes. Many were abused by parents and some were even sexually assaulted which led to immediate trauma.
April and Cheryl were mistreated and their hair was cut off: "Cheryl's long fair had been her pride and glory. Had been her pride and glory" (Culletion 55). This indicates that Cheryl's hair was cut off and shows how Indigenous kids have been abused in multiple ways.
