SPAIN WAR OVERVIEW
SUCCESSES
E.I. managed to avoid Spanish invasion throughout her reign (despite 1588, 1596 and 1598 armadas)
-
-
-
FAILURES
E.I. lack of ambition - didn't capitalise on Armada failure in 1588 by committing money & troops to counter-attack - FOCUSED ON DEFENDING THE CHANNEL
No general military strategy; mostly push and pull between cautious E.I. and ambitious sailors/ministers
-
ARMADA SIGNIFICANCE
REASONS FOR FAILURE
-
-
Spanish ships sought refuge from weather on French coast, English fire-bombed them at Battle of the Gravelines
RESULTS
-
English victory against more powerful Spain gave God's approval for Anglicanism, E.I. used for propaganda e.g. Armada portrait
CONCLUSIONS
Elizabeth continually aggravated the Spanish with raids and support for Dutch Netherlands, and was saved by the weather multiple times when the Armada came about
Elizabeth's failure to counter the Spanish Armada despite having the capability to do so has been rued by her ministers and historians - she was more concerned with security than projecting her power
