History & Background
Cheerleading started off as an all male sport.
Cheerleading was founded by Thomas Peebles, at Princeton University.
The activity Cheerleading first took place in the USA in about the 1860's.
It wasn't until the 1920's before women started cheerleading.

Cheerleading should be considered a sport because it falls under the definition of sport, the physical exertion that they experience, and their competitive nature they have.

Cheer was originally introduced to Alberta in about 1988.
You will be competitive and compete in many skills to claim a position on a cheer team.
In this competitive sport, cheerleaders must train very hard to hopefully get a spot on the team.
Cheerleading has been very competitive all throughout Alberta for many years.
Hook
Have you ever wondered what a football game without cheerleaders would be like? Or who would encourage their teams while participating in sports?
Cheerleading is terribly difficult and is known worldwide for the support they give their teams in the form of dance and cheering. It not only encourages others, but lifts your own spirit up.

They have many competitions nationally and internationally, like many other sports

Cheerleading has rules, to prevent anyone from having an advantage over others, unlike activities do.
Focused training
Everyone who competes must train, almost everyone is equal, and they must work very hard to beat their opponents

Flipping
Must be able to preform many types and be well preformed
Throwing
Have to be able to throw items in routines, and throw others while cheering at a game.
Endurance
Must be able to complete long routines.
