C4. Conservation of biodiversity
ICUN Red List
Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered Critically endangered, Extinct in the wild, Extinct
RLI value of 1.0 qualifies as Least concern. A value of 0 means extinct
Dodo
Went extinct due to the arrival of the Dutch, deforestation, and invasive species
Biological Biodiversity
Richness: number of different species present
Evenness: how close in numbers each species is
Indicator species
An organism whose presence, absence or abundance reflects a specific environmental condition
Biotic Index
Calculate a biotic index: BI=E(ni x ai)/N
Collect data for Simpson's diversity index: D = N(N-1)/En(n-1)
A biotic index is a measure of the health of an ecosystem. Intolerant species score highly, so a clean ecosystem will have a higher biotic index than a polluted ecosystem
Edge effect
:Boundaries between habitats or ecosystems
At the edge of the forest, there is a more sunlight, more wind and less moisture leading to decreased population on the edge
Example of this is forest fragmentation, forests that have been split by roads or farms
Management of endangered species
Human intervention in conservation of an area
Examples: Restoration, recovery of threatened species, removal of introduced species, legal protection against development or pollution, captive breeding
