Heat and temperature
What are the effects of heat gain and loss in our daily lives?
Gain heat = temperature increases
Lose heat = temperature decreases
Gain heat/lose heat = change of state of matter
For example: Water/Wax
Ice > Water > Water Vapour :<3:
Solid wax > Liquid wax :<3:
expand - gain heat
Contract - lose heat
What is the difference between heat and temperature
Heat = form of energy, Temperature = degree of hotness
Unit of temperature - Degrees Celcius
The higher the temperature, the hotter it is.
Skin is not accurate in measuring temperature
we use thermometers to measure temperature
Clinical thermometer
laboratory thermometer
Using a laboratory thermometer
Step2:look at the level of liquid inside it.
Step3: Position yourself at the same level as the level of water.
Step1: hold it upright
Step4: Read the scale
What are the uses of expansion and contraction in our daily lives?
Uses of expansion and contraction:
Laboratory thermometer :<3:
Uses of Expansion -Open the lid of tightly closed bottle
Precautions caused by expansion
Overhead cables
railway tracks
What is heat?
a form of energy that make things hot
cannot see, but can feel effects.
Good and bad conductors of heat
Allow heat to flow through them easily = good conductor
Examples: Metal
heat to pass through slower = bad conductor
Examples: air/glass/non-metalic objects
How does heat flow?
Heat flows from a hotter place to a colder place until they reach the same temperature
What are some sources of heat?
Things that produce heat
Sun
Fuels
Electricity
Light sources
