Industrial Decline
Unemployment below 1%
However in 1986 19.4% unemployed
Knowledge intensive jobs start to increase
Metal manufacturer declined to 3% and so did car manufacturing
Middle East wars effect Birmingham
Arab nations decided to cut the amount of oil being shipped
Oil, petrol and energy much more expensive
Manufacture industry cant keep going
Japanese car manufacturers started to import cars as they're more reliable and fuel efficient
Trade unions strike and shut down factories
Investors dont want to invest there due to strikes
No new foreign car manufacturers set up in Birmingham
Slums removed and small businesses gone
Couldn't afford new rent
Housing Structure
Hosuign stock really poor
110,000 houses sub standard
400 tower blocks built in 50's and 60's
housing led to restrictions in the population
migration of people away from the slum towards the centre of the city
government set up a greenbelt to stop urban sprawl

Lots of jobs in low skilled jobs for migrants
Religious buildings
New services popped up due to influx of migrants
