LIBRO - PSICOLOGÍA - The New Political Story that Could Change Everything
Humans make sense of their world through stories.
the restoration story
Keynesian and neoliberal economics are both modeled on the “restoration story.”
“Despair is the state we fall into when our imagination fails. When we have no story that explains the present and describes the future, hope evaporates. Political failure is at heart a failure of imagination.”
when Keynesian economics hit some bumps, neoliberal economists like Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek invented a new restoration story that cast the enemy as an overly powerful state that quashed individualism and freedom. The hero of their narrative was the entrepreneur, who creates wealth and jobs and who restores harmony by minimizing the power of the state. Eventually this story became just as broadly accepted as the Keynesian story – an opposing narrative with an identical structure – that preceded it.
The global financial crisis left a void in the economic narrative.
the 2008 economic crash, which exposed neoliberalism’s shortcomings, including indiscriminate deregulation for businesses and banks, a weakening of the social safety net, and extreme competition. Yet this intellectually discredited idea still dominates the economic discourse because no one has yet concocted a comprehensive new restoration story to replace it.
A story whereby the hero – the human spirit of altruism – defeats the villain – individualism and competition – can fill the narrative vacuum.
LIBRO - PSICOLOGÍA - The Now Habit (Neil A. Fiore)
Procrastination acts like a phobia: you avoid tasks you see as threats to your worth. Equating your worth to your work makes you vulnerable to procrastination.
To conquer procrastination, separate your worth from your work. Be safe with yourself, regardless of criticism. Select ”I choose to start,” not “I have to finish.”
To detach from procrastination’s “insidious cycle,” recognize the five stages that produce it and its associated anxiety. Procrastination’s issues lead to workaholism, being overwhelmed and perfectionism.
Tech advances (computers, cellphones) offer procrastinators compelling distractions.
Understand the value of time off – vacations, exercise. Schedule legit “guilt-free play” so your unconscious, dreaming mind can make creative leaps in problem solving.
Choosing to start a task doesn’t require your ego to feel confident, motivated or to all-knowing. Choosing to start is an executive brain decision of your higher, mature Self.
The “Unschedule” creates an unconscious drive to start work sooner, since you have protected leisure. Life is not just to-do lists and obligations. It’s like a time clock you punch for 15 to 30 minutes of quality focused work, so you see progress.
To overcome procrastination, choose when to start for 15 to 30 minutes and on what to start, giving your body and brain clear leadership messages. Managing procrastinator requires such statements.
Replace “You have to finish all of this work perfectly” with “Choose when to start; have a draft by 4 p.m.” Give procrastinators positive feedback on their progress, not overwhelming distant deadlines.
Simplemente empieza
LIBRO - BIOLOGÍA - Gene editing for good (BIll Gates)
Gene editing, which allows scientists to alter an organism’s DNA in a highly targeted way, could help eradicate some of the world’s most long-standing health and development problems.
Gene editing can increase crop yields in developing countries by creating highly productive, drought- and pest-resistant crop varieties.
As 75% of the world’s poorest people base their livelihood on small-scale farming, a boost in agricultural production would enhance the lives of millions.
Scientists can use gene editing to fight malaria, which continues to kill almost half a million people per year – most of them in poverty-stricken sub-Saharan Africa.
International organizations should partner with scientists to establish global regulations that will mitigate the technology’s potential risks.
