She has three relationships throughout the novel and each one come with its own challenges. Each one tests her but teaches her a lesson and helps her on her way to self-fulfilment.
Before her first marriage Janie is confused by love and marriage, she is uncertain of her marriage to Logan however believes it is a part of life and that love will come after. “Husbands and wives loved each other… it’s as just so” (24). She believes this will bring her happiness and allow her to not be lonely anymore, she will discover later she can do this without the help of a man.
Her journey is truely about self love and although she is alone at the end she is content and is able to be enough for herself without a husband.
Janie’s marriage to Tea Cake shows her true happiness as she has found a man who she can be herself around. “They went inside and their laughter rang out first from the kitchen and all over the house” (122). Janie is finally able to express herself with a man and have fun with him . Her last marriages were not so fun and she was given high expectations for how to behave.
When she leaves Logan she has hope for freedom and love, however her next husband also does not provide her with this.
Janie is optimistic at the start of her relationship with Jody, however they are not equals in their relationship and he treats her as she is a trophy. She helps him greatly with his shop, however he views her as the face to make people interested. “Jody told her to dress up and stand in the store all that evening” (47). Therefore she is restricted in her relationship and is not able to act as she wishes.
After Jody’s death she feels, “she would have the rest of her life to do as she pleased” (101). Illustrating a sense of freedom and strength in herself as she knows she will be okay by herself.
Before her marriage to Tea cake, Janie has a negative view of marriage, “It always changes folks, and sometimes it brings out dirt and meanness dat even de person didn’t know they had in ‘em theyselves.” However as she truly loves Tea cake she decides to give it another go.
