Origins of the Cold War
The atomic bomb
Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on 6th August 1945
-
In reaction to the US bomb, the Soviet Union developed their own bomb during 1949.
-
The building of nuclear weapons, developed into an arms race with each country building more and more weapons.
The US had hoped that the atomic bomb would be a strong negotiating card to use with the Soviet Union.
There was also a hope that the atomic bomb would scare the Soviet Union into giving into US demands over Eastern Europe.
The Soviet Union stepped up the development of a protective buffer zone of countries between the West and the Soviet Union.
-
Tehran Conference 1943
-
agreement by Britain and the United States to open up a second front in Europe to help relieve the pressure on Soviet Union who were fighting the Nazis on the Eastern front.
second agreement coming out of Tehran was the support of the Soviet Union in the fight against Japan, but the condition was on the successful defeat of Germany first.
German should be left as a weak nation after the war and land it had seized during the expansion of Germany should be returned to those countries who had lost it.
The Tehran Conference caused some tension between the powers, specifically Britain.

-
Yalta Conference 1945
the promised second front had been opened by British and US forces in Western Europe and significant gains had been made by both sides against Germany.
-
The allies agreed that it would be split into four zones of occupation, each controlled by one allied power, France, Britain, the Soviet Union and the United States.
It was also agreed that like the First World War, Germany would have to pay reparations to the allies, half of these would go directly to the Soviet Union.
-
-
The Soviet Union wished for all 16 of the Soviet Republics to be admitted individually, as the United Nations was set up to admit all countries.
US and France did not want all 16 republics admitted so allowed Russia, Ukraine and Belarus to join.

-
Potsdam Conference 1945
-
The US had developed the atomic bomb, the ultimate new weapon.
-
Truman was relatively new to the diplomatic discussions as he was often left out of the loop by Roosevelt.
Attlee was also not interested in the conference as he had been newly elected and wanted to get on with the business of governing Britain.
it confirmed the division of Germany into four zone each run by a different power. This would also be extended to Berlin despite Berlin being inside the Soviet sector of Germany.
Truman however disagreed with the reparations repayments. He did not want Germany economically crippled as this might bring about resentment and a repeat of Nazism.
Truman also wanted to address Poland again. He wanted there to be new borders and for Soviet influence to reduced over Poland.
The Soviet Army, was starting to occupy the countries it had repelled the Nazis from.
