most elements have different isotopes, but there are usually one or two stable ones
the other isotopes tend to be unstable and radioactive which means they give out nuclear radiation and may decay into other elements
after spitting out an alpha or beta, nuclues might need to get rid of extra energy , it does this by emmiting a gamma ray
if a nuclues contains lots of neutrons , it may throw out one. The no. of protons stay the same and now it has a different nuclear mass , so it becomes an isotope of the same element
