HUMAN INFLUENCES ON ECOSYSTEM
The Carbon Cycle
Nature's way of reusing carbon atoms, which travel from the atmosphere into organisms in the Earth and then back into the atmosphere over and over again.
Carbon is an important element
essential part for carbohydrates, fats & proteins
Process:
photosynthesis
CO2
glucose
respiration
glucose
CO2
combustion
fuel
CO2
Fossil Fuels Combustion
Produces CO2
Green house gas
traps oxygen into CO2
Oxygen decreases
CO2 increases
Deforestation
Impacts:
loss of habitat
extinction of species
loss of soil
soil erosion
soil is exposed to rain
flooding
fewer plants to absorb the CO2
increase in CO2 in the atmosphere
Why?
wood = fuel
human need land to live
agriculture
Water Pollution
Source
fertilizers
contains
nitrates
and
phosphates
nitrates are soluble in water
if nitrate fertiliser is put into the soil, it will be washed out in solution when it rains
leaching
causes reduction in oxygen in water
kills fish
untreated sewages
Water Eutrophication
is a type of water pollution caused by the addition of sewage or fertiliser.
increases
nitrate
concentration in water
increases producers (algae/aquatic plants)
The algal bloom covers the water’s surface killing any plants below the surface as light and oxygen cannot reach them.
Algae also die as the nutrients run out
Aerobic bacteria decompose the dead plants.
Bacteria use up oxygen for respiration
fish and other organisms die due to lack of oxygen
