Living together in the UK
Community Management schemes
East London Community Recycling Partnership
A not-for-profit organisation that is a good example of a community waste management scheme. It collects food waste in sealed bins from the local residents to turn into compost. Dry waste materials are collected for recycling. As well as helping the environment, this also creates jobs for people who are unemployed / people with learning difficulties and provides valuable experience of community initiatives for volunteers.
Rights
Gay Cake Case
Ashers Baking Company refused to make a cake with a message promoting same-sex marriage, citing their religious beliefs. This was a clash of human rights for the customer and seller.
Equality Act 2010
Protects against the discrimination of minority parties under one legislative act. IT protects 9 main characteristics.

Migration
The Migrant Crisis
In 2016, the EU faced a migrant crisis, where mass numbers of migrants were travelling from conflict areas in Africa and the Middle East. There were images and videos spread across social media showing distressing stories of these migrants. The pressure group / charity Save the Children campaigned to bring some orphan children into the UK. The media was used to lobby the government to bring about a change in policy.
Local Government
Housing benefit
This benefit is paid by the state to those on low incomes as well as to those who are unemployed. Rents are determined by the local demand at the time.
Child benefits
When parents are paid a benefit for each of their children. From 2013, this was tested for those earning over £50,000 per year. Those earning over £60,000 a year would pay more in tax than they would get by claiming this benefit.

Referendums
EU Referendum
After the 2015 general election, David Cameron (re-elected Prime Minister) held an In-Out referendum on Britain's membership in the EU. The referendum took place on the 23rd June 2016. David Cameron voted to remain, while Boris Johnson wanted to leave. David Cameron resigned the morning after the count because as a nation, the UK had voted to leave. Theresa May was elected as the next Prime Minister and the UK entered a 2 year negotiation phase. The UK officially left the EU on the 31st January 2020, although negotiations extended further.
Protesting
Justice for Chunky
A campaign that was held for Chunky, a tortured dog. This petition was started by Maxine Berry and attracted many supporters.
Greenpeace
This international pressure group has no links with any governmental body, meaning that it is free to campaign on environmental issues. It investigates, exposes and confronts environmental abuse, and champions environmentally responsible solutions. They were founded in 1971 in Vancouver, Canada.
Trade Unions
The Engineering Employers Federation
Set up in 1896, it is a national body that is the largest sector employers' association in the UK and has regional offices throughout the country. It aims to provide it's member businesses with advice, guidance and support on employment law, employee relations, health and safety issues and more. As well as this, the body also lobbies the government and local MPs.

Votes for Prisoners
In 2005, the Court said that banning all prisoners from voting in the UK was a breach of human rights and therefore unlawful, however, the UK Parliament refused to accept this and voted against giving any prisoners the vote.
Whole life prison sentences
Three multiple murderers took the UK Government to Court, claiming that whole life sentences did not offer any form of review and therefore a possible release date. The Court ruled that a whole-life sentence breached Article 3 of the Convention which prohibits torture.
The Formation of the Government
Coalition UK 2010
Lib Dems and Conservatives 2010 David Cameron/Nick Clegg. This was the result of a hung parliament, whereby no single party had a majority. The Cameron–Clegg coalition was formed when Cameron was invited by Queen Elizabeth II to form a government, following the resignation of Prime Minister Gordon Brown on 11 May 2010, after the general election on 6 May.

Commonwealth
Cook Island's seabed minerals
The government of this group of islands asked the Commonwealth to help create regulations and set up a regulatory authority. It enabled the government and the people of these islands to benefit from the new source of income.
NGOs
Oxfam
This non-governmental organisation is a UK-based international humanitarian relief NGO. It was first started in 1942, when the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief was set up to pressure the wartime government to help the starving children in Belgium & Greece.
Doctors without Borders /MSF
This NGO was set up in 1971 and operates in over 60 worldwide countries. In the Ukraine alone, the Médicins Sans Frontières (MSF) has 62 staff working with 130 Ukrainian staff to provide basic healthcare.

Levenson Inquiry
The Leveson Inquiry was a judicial public inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the British press following the News International phone hacking scandal.
OFFCOM
This radio/broadcasting office of regulation. Places scrutiny over TV, radio, video.
News of the World
In 2011, they shut down because it's reporters and editors had been accused of hacking into people's phones for private information. They would then publish this information in the newspaper. One of the editors was jailed (he was at the time the Prime Minister's official spokesperson). Celebrities and politicians were among some of the people who were affected by this hacking scandal.
International Relations
Ukraine/Russia War (ongoing)
The UK has cut off trade to Russia amongst various other causes of action, and has sent military aid to Ukraine to support their efforts.
