Effects of Climate Change
Social
Sea level rise
600 million people live in coastal areas that are less than 10m above sea level meaning that the rise in sea level may mean they have to move or are affected by floods.
People living in vulnerable areas might have to move home or country.
People may lose their jobs if they are in fishing or tourism and learn new skills
Numbers of environmental refugees - people who have lost their homes due to flooding - will increase.
Water sources could be polluted by salt water leading to diseases.
Drought
Lack of water - particularly in LIDCs
Threat of water security and supply due to declining summer river flows, reduces groundwater replenishment and increased risk of drought.
Depletion of ozone layer
Increase in skin cancer
Rise in number of people suffering from eye diseases such as cataract
Floods
Heavy floods in the UK due to heavy downpours which leads to illness as water supplies are contaminated.
Creates an environment which is good for disease-carrying insects like mosquitoes
Rising temperatures
Higher levels of air pollutants
Increased transfer of diseases through unclean water and contaminated food
Extreme weather
Loss of life
Environmental
Sea level rise
Fresh water sources could be polluted.
Damage could occur to coastal ecosystems such as mangrove swamps, which form natural barriers to storms.
Damage to coral reefs by storms and powerful waves which affect fish breeding grounds and ecosystems
Estimated that up to 33% of coastal land and wetlands could be lost in the next 100 years
Harbours may become locked by sediment due to increased rates of coastal erosion.
Warming seas lead to more intense tropical storms
Droughts
Stress will be put on water resources, biodiversity, and natural habitats.
Rising temperatures
All species are at risk. Many won't be able to survive the rising temperatures.
Floods
Animals lose their habitats
Animals are killed
Crops are ruined
Economic
Sea level rise
Many important world cities could be affected by flooding.
Valuable agricultural land may be lost to the sea or polluted by seawater. Harbours and ports may be affected which has an impact on fishing and trade,
Transport systems could be destroyed,
Valuable land and property will need expensive measures of coastal defence.
Many countries depend on coastal tourism as their main source of income. Beaches may be eroded or flooded, forcing hotels to close. People may decide not to visit.
Rising temperatures
Major biodiversity loss which affects both individual species and their ecosystems that help support economic growth and human health.
Many crops like peaches, oranges and apples, which were not grown in the UK before can now be grown in the UK.
Will affect crops as well as types of crops that are grown in a certain area by affecting agricultural inputs such as water for irrigation, and amounts of solar radiation that affect the growth of plants.
Droughts
Costs more money
Have to import food because the crops don't grow without water.
Floods
Crops are ruined so their is loss of industry
