- - - - sugarman (1970)- argues working class subcultures has four key features that act as a barrier to educational achievement. fatalism (believe in fate), collectivism (valuing being part of a group rather than individual), immediate gratification (seeking pleasure to get rewards), present time orientation (present is more important than future)
        
        argue that WC parents pass on their beliefs and values to their children through primary socialisation, the children internalise them and results in underachievement.
    - - criticism- teachers have a speech hierarchy and treat students different on how they work
    - - parenting style- parents with higher qualifications emphasise consistent discipline and high expectations of their children, supporting achievement by encouraging them. Parents with fewer qualifications are more likely to apply harsh discipline leading to poorer motivation and problems with interactions
      - use of income- parents with higher qualifications not only tend to have higher incomes they also spend their income in ways that promote their childrens educational success.
- - - - critism- schools are a fair institution as cultural deprivation theorists assume, accused of determinism as assumes people that are labelled have no choice but to fulfill it. marxists critise as it ignores the wider strudtures of power within labelling, the theory blames teachers but doesnt explain why.
