Room(How do the text elements influence the audience? - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Jack initially describes his look as having long hair that his mother occasionally cuts. He's also characterized as having a tiny mouth, small nose, and big eyes. Later on, Old Nick describes Jack to have grown up substantially, and his mother also described how his skin had become pale because of the lack of sunlight they had been held captive in the Room.
      - In Chapter 1, Jack describes himself as having "longish but unorganized hair that Ma trims every so often with a pair of scissors" (Page 9).
    - - The actions have been developed in a very dynamic way for Jack. He started out being satisfied with being within the Room and seemed happy with staying in the Room with his mother. However, as the story progressed he came to the realization that the Room was more of a solitary confinement, rather than a home to live in. So, his actions changed through his attempts to escape the Room, and he took on a dynamic role where he had to face his fears, rather than staying away from them.
      - At the start of the book Jack used to be effervescent about the thought of staying in the room: "I'm so excited to wake up and start another day in Room. It's going to be a good one" (Page 12)
      - Jack moves on from "Room" and decides that he wants to explore the outside world "I like the idea of all the different places in the world, but I'm glad I'm not in them because I'm in my own place, which is just being home" (Page 321)
    - - Within the start of the story the inner thoughts of Jack to illustrated a sense of authenticity and realism through the point of view of an observant child. The inner thoughts of Jack within the start of the story were extremely happy and stress free as he woke up everyday to engage in games with his mother. However, as the story progressed Jack eventually went through trauma and fear, this changed the inner thoughts because of how they became more evolved and mature.
      - At the beginning of the book, Jack is very naive and innocent, and doesn't question the world around him. For example: "I close my eyes and pretend to be invisible" (Page 13).
      - At the end of the book Jack begins to understand the complexities of the world around him and build empathy for other people. For example: "I'm sorry for them that they can't see the world right, 'cause they're all stuck in their own heads" (Page 301).
    - - Jack's relationship with his mother, Ma, is the most central and developed relationship in the story. Through Jack's perspective, the reader is able to see the depth and complexity of their relationship, as they navigate their captivity and eventual escape from "Room." In their escape from the Room their emotional attachment provided the vital strength they needed to escape.
      - "Ma's hair is all gone and she looks so sick but she smiles when she sees me and then I know everything's okay"(Page 316)
      - "She hugs me so hard it hurts and then she says she's sorry" (Page 54)
    - - At the beginning of the story Jack has limited vocabulary and simple grammar which both reflect both his youth and the fact that he has only ever known life in the "Room." His vocabulary is limited to the words and expressions he has picked up from his mother, and he frequently talks in brief, fragmented sentences. However, later on in the story Jack begins to learn more about the world outside of "Room," his language and vocabulary begin to expand. He learns new words and phrases from his mother, the books they read, and the people they meet after they escape.
      - "Ma puts me on her left shoulder so I can see better and she says don't look to the right, just straight ahead" (Page 14)
      - "I'm so frustrated that I want to scream, but then I remember I'm not a baby anymore" (Page 298)
  - - - In the later stages of the story Old Nick's physical appearance is developed through the revelation of scars and tattoos on his body. When Ma is trying to find a way to escape, she notices a tattoo on Old Nick's arm and wonders if it might be a clue to his identity. She also notices scars on his back, which suggest a violent past. These details add complexity to Old Nick's character and further emphasize the danger that he poses to Jack and Ma. Overall, the physical appearance of Old Nick is developed through a combination of details such as his size, strength, smell, voice, clothing, scars, and tattoos. These details create a vivid and menacing picture of his character, emphasizing the fear and danger that he poses to Jack and Ma.
    - - The actions of Old Nick are developed throughout the story in a brutal sequence. It starts off with abduction, through him kidnapping Jack’s mother at a young age. Then his actions turn into emotional manipulation with Jack’s mother as he tries to control her with guilt and fear by threatening to harm Jack. Finally, his actions develop into physical violence through him hitting Jack’s mother with a belt on multiple occasions in an attempt to keep them both under control..
    - - During the escape attempt, Ma hits Old Nick over the head with a heavy object, knocking him unconscious. Afterward, Jack notes that Old Nick "breathes all funny, like he's trying to get up but he can't" (Page 254). This brief glimpse into Old Nick's physical state hints at his confusion and disorientation.
    - - During the story the reader is given snippets of Old Nick's life outside of the shed throughout the tale, including his interactions with his neighbours and his girlfriend. These interactions emphasise his abusive nature even more, as he is demonstrated to be cunning and manipulative in his dealings with others, taking advantage of his charm and magnetism to take advantage of those around him. For example, it is revealed that he verbally and physically abuses his girlfriend and lies to her about his work and his finances.
    - - Within the start of the story Old Nick is described as a character that is extremely threatening, and speaks in a tone that induces fear into other people. If there is someone who disagrees with him in a slightest way, he will torture them for the rest of eterintity. At the start of the book he would use statements like “Shut up” to assert his dominance, and oppress any other comments.
        However, later on in the story he becomes more of a two-faced man, this is through his speaking tone becoming more charismatic to manipulate people to get what he wants. For example, in one part of the story Old Nick lies to his girlfriend about his job and his finances, and uses flattery and charm to gain her trust.
