Social ageing theories
The disengagement theory:
Ageing is an inevitable, mutual withdrawal or disengagement, resulting in decreased interaction between the ageing person and others in the social system she/he belongs to
The activity theory:
Maintenance of high activity levels is necessary in order to inhibit deteriorative age trends in the behavioral potential of the individual and to increase his satisfaction with life
The continuity theory:
People do not change dramatically with regard to their behavioral preferences as they age, but rather substitute new roles for those they may have lost, adapting to age-related changes as they occur. (external continuity)
Personality and core values become more pronounced (internal continuity)
