The ghosts - a Christmas carol
The ghost of Christmas Past is the first ghost. Takes his to observe various scened from his past, which allows the reader to empathise. This is because Dickens adopts a sympathetic tone during the stave, causing the reader to understand how scrooges past has shaped his character in the present. Dickens illistares scrooge is capable of change by displaying a misanthropic attitude. Gives the reader hope.
Apperarance
tunic "of purest white" which emphasises its purity and innocence. This gives the spirit an impression of moral authority which altitudes the biblical image of Jesus who wears white and acts as a moral compass for christians, transmitting the christian message of goodness to humanity.
voice - "soft and gentle" - Gentle description and calm dameanour contrasts to the suffering of Marley, the first ghost the reader is introduced to.
"like a child" BUT also " like an old man". uses similes to juxtapose ideas. could be argues the ghost encompasses all of scrooges past from his youth to his old age and so reflects it in its appearance.
Purpose
guide scrooge towards his redemption by choosing to take him to significant and provocative moments from his past.
"The Ghost stopped at a certain warehouse door, and asked Scrooge if he knew it."
The Ghost is making Scrooge feel as though he has some control, and thus that any change that comes from this is his own doing. It suggests that anyone can change their personality if they put their mind to it.
He is allowing scrooge to interpret it
"A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still."
The ghost of Christmas present (2)
often seen as the personification of Christmas spirit. The spirit takes scrooge to see the different ways Christmas is celebrated, to the humble Cratchit family to lively party at Freds house. Therefore be said the spirits purpose is to highlight the importance of schristmas.
APPEARANCE - described as "jolly giant" who wears a "green robe" And a "holly wreath" on its head. drawing on traditional ideas for Father Christmas.
Dickens gives the spirit a "glowing torch" which continues the motif of light that also illustrated by the ghost of Christmas Past, presenting light as symbolic of positivity.
Purpose
Mouthpiece on Dickens views on social reform as this is a key theme which is heavily exploited during the stave. Purpose to guide scrooge towards his redemption, it transcends his role in order to present a social commentary
The spirit introduced to be sitting on a "kind of throne" made of food. change to the Malthusian view that there are not enough resources aound.

tightens issues of poverty in society, presenting it as a pressing concern which readers shouldn't ignore, ultimately prompting them to actively take part in social reform

The ghost uses scrooges words against him in a moment where scrooge questions tiny Tims life. shows he still has emotions and a heart.
Quoting Scrooge when he is already vulnerable, as is the reader, to make an impact, and show Scrooge the error of his ways.

summary
approaches scrooge "slowly, gravely, silently" this triple adverb immediately changes the tone of the narrative, introducing an ominous and sombre quality. heightens the fact that the the spirit is a personification of death.
The phantom is used by dickens to visibly exemplify the idea of accountability and the fact that actions have consequences .
appearance
"deep black garment" its presence seemed to "scatter gloom" am its figure was surrounded by "darkness". Dickens uses a semantic field of blackness, which contrasts the previous 2 sprites as they were both symbols of light. could suggest is future will be bleak and unpromising presenting the idea he needs to repent and exhibit Christmas in order to prevent these consequences.
"canceled its head, its face, its form" and outlines the "mysterious presence' it has. - anonymity, perhaps to show uncertainty and indefinite nature of future.

show dark consequences of his actions. dickens uses prolepsis (flash forward) To show Scrooge various people.

."read upon the neglected grave his own name, EBENEEZER SCROOGE " the adjective "neglected" is used both during the life of scrooge as well as death. therefore the reader is able to see the unchanging timeline of scrooges life. The way that scrooge lived in life is how he dies, irony.
