symbolic of the issues that plague mankind, and so argued that they are portrayed as children as Dickens is trying to show that they are the ones that suffer the most from society's issues.
purpose to show the effects of poverty. not just a warning to scrooge but also mankind. scrooge was a victim of ignorance as he willingly ignored the plight of the working class.victim of want as he is so focused on money.
during the 19th century the philanthropy (charity) was becoming more popular and so pushing the readers to give more to charity.
"hideous" dickens heightens the dramatic impact of their characters. structurally they are introduced after the happy celebrations, their appearance is more abrupt and disturbing which adds tension.
Belle
scrooges former fiance. explores the theme of family when scrooge sees her with her children, he wonders what it would've been like. causes his sight to go "very dim indeed" Suggesting he has started to cry. This is significant display of emotion as it highlights how deeply scrooge is affected by regret.
"another idol has displaced me ... a golden one" - the work "idol' Is interesting from Dickens due to its connotations. A n idol is associated with god like figure that people worship. money is his main focus that he is focused on.
Ms cratchit
"dressed out but poorly in a twice turned gown"
Mrs Cratchit, although poor, represents the family's will to make the best of things - to celebrate in spite of their poverty. even though not the most expensive dress they are trying to look their best.
"twice turned" means second hand - unable to buy fresh clothing.
she had "great delight there was "one small atom of bone" remaining from the dinner. he excitement implies that this was not a frequent event showing that they often struggle with feeding everyone. she remains optimistic and good-natured.
Old joe
dickens uses blunt and harsh tones during this section which heightens the immorality that occurs in old joes shop.
"reeked with crime and misery"
intense critisism, inhumane, realistic and highly descriptive.
