What does a language teacher teach?
Language training professionals often speak of the
four skills
Reading
: Provide appropriate reading material and tasks that require students to make use of that material in ways that are authentic and relevant to the student's needs.
Listening
: The teacher's job, then, is to plan and run activities that allow students to practice authentic listening, gradually increasing the level of difficulty over time.
Writing
: In many cases, students appreciate the opportunity to write something down before they say it. Teachers, then, can use writing as a tool to enhance other activities or as an activity in its own right.
Speaking
: Plan and run activities that encourage students to speak at a level they are comfortable with, and to create an atmosphere in which students feel confident enough to speak up.
