1. Oil Extraction
oils from various sources, eg: olives and rapeseed, are extracted and refined to remove impurities

2. Hydrogenated
oil is hydrogenated by forcing hydrogen gas through the double bond of an unsaturated oil in the presence of a nickel catalyst
it is now converted into a saturated, semi-solid fat

4. Emulsification
an emulsifying agent, eg: lecithin, is added to prevent the fat and liquid in the margarine from separating
5. Churned
a machine called a votator churns the oil and water-based ingredients together until they form an emulsion

7. Packaged and Labelled

packaging is labelled with details including type of margarine, ingredients, storage instructions, allergy advice and nutritional information
