Religious experience
William James believed that the experience of the indervidual was really and that is what is important . Admitted not a logica proof that god exists but evidence in support of god .
James distinguished between the healthy minded soul and the sick soul, Religous experiences are good because they have been shown to make people healthy minded
For James he recognises 4 ways to define Religious experiences, these are 1) ineffability most recognised characteristics ,2) noetic quality information gained about god,3) transiency experience isn’t long lasting, 4) passive: no control.
Physiological effects of Religous experiences, drinking, drugs, tiredness, fasting and dehydration will cause and change the way we think this might explain davey falcus , Nicky Cruz, St Teresa of Avila Religous experience.

1) experience of god through common objects, e.g. seeing god in a sunset
2) experiencing god through an unusual object, e.g. seeing the Virgin Mary
3) experiencing gods through private experience, e.g. in a dream
4) experiencing god through private sensation, e.g. feeling or experience
5) experiencing god that is not mediated by any sensation, e.g. person claiming to be aware of god

Mystical Religous experiences differentiate between mysticism and mystical experiences, mysticism is direct knowledge of god , spiritual truth or unlitmate realituy revealed . Whereas mystical experiences are expericiences of something transcendent, beyond moral awareness.
Critisms of Religous experiences include psychological effects, some conclude that they may be interpreted as just illusions because they are unusual
Minds playing tricks on us, as we are prone to perceptual errors so maybe experience with god out a greater power is just another example
Another critism are from feuerbach and Freud people dont have the inteleigence to recognise what is real or illusion, RE are being mistaken for reality.
