Role of the Father
Research
Attachment to Father's: most babies attach to their father's (75% by 18mnths) but rarely as the first attachment (3%) Schaffer and Emerson'
Distinctive Role for Father's: Father's may have a distinctive role involving play and stimulation (Grossman et al)
Father's as primary attachment figures: those father's who were primary caregivers more responsive than secondary caregiver father's (field)
Confusion over Research Questions: competing research questions 0revent a simple answer about the father's role
Conflicting Evidence: studies have reached different conclusions about a distinctive role for father's
Counterpoint: father's may be pre disposed to a role but single mothers and lesbian parent ls simply take on these roles
-
Bias in Research: Preconceptions lead to observer bias, may affect some studies

Types of Attachment
The Strange Situation:
Procedure:
- 7 stage controlled observation
Assesses;
- Proximity seeking
- Exploration
- secure base
- stranger anxiety
- seperation anxiety
- response to reunion
Findings: babies show consistent patterns of attachment behaviour
Types of Attachment;
- Secure: enthusiastic greeting, generally content moderate anxiety
- Avoidant: avoids reunion, generally reduced responses
- Resistant: resists reunion, generally more fistressed
Evaluation
Good Predictive Validity: Attachment type predicts later social behaviour eg school success, bullying (McCormick et al )
Counterpoint Kagan suggests behavioural differences due to genetically influenced anxiety levels
-
Culture Bound Western measure other cultures have it different experiences that affect behaviour in the Strange Situation
