Network Hardware
NIC - offers an interface port for a wired connection. Provides a radio transmitter for connecting wirelessly
Switch - records which computers are connected to which ports, a switch only forwards traffic to the intended recipient
Router - sends data signals across the internet, collect potential routes for sending sata and determines the faster one.
WAP - uses a radio receiver to allow a wireless connection to a network. Creates its own wireless network for devices to connect to

Network Topologies
Bus
All nodes connected to a central cable , with terminators at each end
-
Mesh
All devices are connected to each other, in a full mesh all devices are directly connected to every other device
Ring
All devices are connected in a circular pattern, each device is connected to 2 others
Wireless and Wired
Wireless
-
-
-
Cheap to set up and can have multiple connection points, installation is easy and most devices can connect automatically, usually up to 50mb/s, easier to intercept as it cannot be contained to one building
Wired
-
-
Installation can be expensive, usually 1 gigabit/s, more secure than wireless, need physical devices to steal data
