Enery and the enviromental
Fossil fuels
Negative Factors
Concern about the local and global effects of unricted fossil fuel use.
Finite nature of fossil fuel, which will run out if current rates of use are continued for another 50 years or more.
Positive Factors
Human ingenuit, by research and development, to harbess what the Earth provides in abundance, notably wind and sunshine.
Not only will these renawable resources last foever, but they are cleaner and much more widley available. Fossil fuels were formed only in certain place on the Earth's surface.
Formation of fossil fuels
➦They were formed from the decomposition of the remains of plants and animals.
➦ It look millions of years for them to accumulate and form deposits which are large enough to be exploited for human use.
Formation of coal
As older trees and plants died, the dead vegetation decomposed on the swampy forest floor, later rivers coverred the peat with deposit of mud and sand were compressed into sedimentary rocks and the peat gardened into coal.
Coal is a balck rock, so useful because it give out heat when it burns.
Foramtion of Oil and natural gas
Descomposition of plants and dead creature which collected in layer on the sea bed. As the sand was compressed into hard sanstone rock, the oil and gas separated, and rose through the sandstone, filling in the space between the practice of rock. The lighter gas rose to the top. Below the oil is a layer of more dense water.
Enery resources and the generation of electricity
What are the important features of world energy supply and use that are shown
➦ World energy continues to increase
➦ The world still relies greatly on energy from fossil fuels.
➦ Nuclear energy and hydroelectricity are the only non-fossil fuel in widespread use.
➦ Hydroelectricity is the only renewable source with a large enough use be named snd separated.
➦ Renewables make only a small contribution, but it can be seen to be increasing
Different methods of generating electricity
Energy source to replace fossil fuel use:
Renewable energy source: Energy resource that is replaced naturally, so that it never runs out.
Sustainable energy resoource: Energy source that can be used for a long time. The enviroment or resource on which it depends is not being used up.
Non-renewable energy sources and electricity generation
Thermal and nuclear are non-renewable resources used to generate electricity.
However, making electricity using fossil fuel, and coal in particular, is a dirty. It is a major cuase of air pollution.
They are noy inexhaustible. In use, electricity is clean energy.
Nuclear power is produce by "fission". At the centre of each atom is a nucleus, as an atom is split usiong the metal uranium in a nuclear reactor, a great deal of heat energy is released. Heat from this harnessed for making electricity
Avantages od non-renewable energy source:
Social advantages
It provide services in the home, such as lighting, refrigeration and heating, which improve people's quality of life
Economic advantages
It is vital for the economic development of countries, energy is needed yo power machinery for industrial production.
Social an economic advanatges
Machines are increasingly doing the worck that people had always done in farming. The transport revolution allows local, national movement of people and goods.
