Christianity and the challenge of secularisation
Give three examples of how the UK is becoming increasingly secular
Replacement of religion
( predominantly Christianity)
as the source of truth and moral values
We've seen the growth in
science
and the growth in the
empirical
method= so empiricism= especially since the
enlightenment
= science and empiricism have become the authoritative
sources of truth
( Synoptic link-
Religious Language
- Humans today as
AJ Ayer said- value ideas for which there is evidence
=
**NO FAITH WE WANT FACTS= This is
called
epistemic imperialism= where empiricism has become the dominant source of Knowledge in a society
*
Linking back to Christianity=
The thing about
religion
is that it is
not evidence
based= there is no evidence for the
resurrection= no evidence for life after death=it is about faith
=
Synoptic link religious language= becomes
meaningless
= Quotes in the bible= because it cannot be empirically verified=

Decline in church attendance
links to idea that we have lost a sense of meaning and identity within the church
Also decline in the influence of the church itself and religious leaders e.g.
Archbishop of Canterbury
= sending out messages of the importance of
Christmas
and
Easter
= people do not read= don't have as much influence over the population= in terms of people attitudes towards
ethical issues e.g, same sex marriage, divorce
Decline in the number of people identifying as a Christian= 2021 census- less than half of the population identified as Christian= UK becoming more secuarised
Two reasons why religion is becoming more secular
Less
parents are raising their
children
within a religion/ or are giving their children more choice about their beliefs= may still baptise them, and celebrate Christmas= but may not indoctrinate them- Richard dawkins= so more
cultural
within their Christianity, rather than
fundamentalist or evangelical
Exposure to alternative views and belief systems e.g. internet
Relegation of religion as a
private sphere
= something you do in your own home
rise of individualism
People are very self centered= autonomy and liberty
Trace back to John Stuart mills book on liberty= ' over his mind, body and mind, the individual is sovereign' today have more freedom and choice, what they believe, what they do and how they live their lives
So can chose not to be religious- declare being an athiest
Creates that wider cultural change
Rise of existentialism
'Existence precedes essence'
give our life purpose
