CODING, CAPACITY AND DURATION
coding
group 1 (acoustically similar): eg. cat, mat, bat)
-
-
group 3 (semantically similar): eg. great, big, large
-
-
shown the words and were asked to recall them in the correct order immediately (short term). tended to do worse with acoustically similar words
when they recalled the list after 20 mins (long term) they did worse with the semantically similar words
-
evaluation
-
eg. STM uses mostly acoustic coding, LTM uses mostly semantic
this was an important step in understanding our memory, led to multi-store model
-
capacity
-
the researcher reads out four digits and the ppts recalls these out loud in the correct order. if correct the researcher reads out five digits ect
-
mean for letters was 7.3, mean for numbers was 9.3

-
duration
Peterson and Peterson did trials on student. gave students a consonant syllable (pyg). they were then given a 3 digit number and asked to count backwards until told to stop
-
-
the varying time periods were 3,6,9,12,15,18 seconds
3 seconds - 80%, 18 sec - 3%
suggest STM maybe be about 18 secs, unless we repeat info over and over
duration LTM
recall was tested in various ways: 1) photo recognition test consisting of 50 photos from the high school yearbooks

evaluation
consonant syllables do not reflect most everyday memory activities where what we are trying to remember is meaningful
