SDG 15: Life on Land
How bad is it?
Nearly 50% of key biodiversity (freshwater, terrestrial, and mountain) areas are protected.
Contribute to reducing the risks of natural disasters such as floods and landslides, regulate climate and maintain the productivity of agricultural systems
Land degradation affects more than 60% of global soil resources, due mostly to intensive agriculture and deforestation.
Degraded land influences the lives of more than 1 billion people who rely on this land for food production.
Agricultural expansion is driving almost 90 per cent of global deforestation, including 49.6 per cent from expansion for cropland and 38.5 per cent for livestock grazing.
Will it get any worse?
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that climate change could lead to increased land degradation, desertification, and loss of biodiversity. This could exacerbate food and water insecurity and lead to displacement of people and conflict over resources.
Many countries have made commitments to protect and restore terrestrial ecosystems through initiatives such as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, the Bonn Challenge (Germany+ The International Union for Conservation of Nature), and the New York Declaration on Forests.
Initiatives such as agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and organic farming are gaining momentum.
There have been increased efforts to protect forests from deforestation through initiatives such as REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).
What can be done?
Conservation Efforts
Governments and organizations around the world are working to conserve and protect natural habitats and ecosystems, such as forests, wetlands, grasslands, and coral reefs, to preserve biodiversity and prevent land degradation.
