Renaissance Humanism was characterised by a revival of interest in the classical world and studies focusing on human nature rather than religion. The tradition dates back to Petrarch (1304-1374), an Italian author who sought out 'lost' ancient manuscripts in the 14th century.
New patrons demanded novel subjects from artists, especially portraits and scenes from contemporary life, as part of a growing mercantile class.
The most important and useful innovations are the printing press, firearms, and the compass.
