Formative Assessment

Formative assessment is a type of evaluation that is conducted during the learning process to provide feedback to learners and instructors on their progress and understanding of a particular subject or skill. The primary purpose of formative assessment is to identify areas where learners may need additional support or instruction in order to improve their learning outcomes.

Formative assessments can take many forms, such as quizzes, discussions, peer reviews, or assignments. They can be used to measure a learner's comprehension, skills, and attitudes as they engage in the learning process. The results of formative assessments are typically used to guide instructional decisions, such as adapting teaching methods or providing targeted feedback to learners.

Summative assessment is a type of evaluation that is typically administered at the end of a learning period, such as a course or a unit of study. Its purpose is to measure the overall achievement or proficiency level of the learner in a particular subject or skill area.

Summative assessments can take many forms, such as final exams, standardized tests, essays, projects, or portfolios. The results of summative assessments are typically used to assign grades or to make decisions about a learner's progress or readiness for further study or advancement.

It measures the performance of a student against previous performances from that student. With this method you’re trying to improve yourself by comparing previous results. You’re not comparing yourself against other students, which may be not so good for your self-confidence. (Muhammad Sohail Khan)
