ethnic inequality
The Media
The media can act as a form of ethnic inequality. As in some cases ethnic minorities are underrepresented + marginalised
Moore et al (2005) - summarised stereotypes of black people found by Van Dijk (1991) into 5 groups; as criminals, as abnormal, as a threat, as dependant, as unimportant
Bennet et al (2006) - argues the interests of ethnic minorities are ignored and cant identify with British tv. Media institutions are geared towards the interests of white people (typically those who are oxbridge educated, upper class white men)
Malik (2002) - expressed concern that the contemporary media does not accuretly reflect the ethnic minority of the contemporary uk
- as a result minority ethnic communities are declining to watch mainstream tv channels
income + wealth
a range of evidence suggests ethnic minorities are more likely than white people to have a lower income + wealth
ONS (2014) - found two fifths of people from ethnic minorities live in low-income households, twice the rate than for white groups
Joseph Rowntree foundation (2007) - men from each ethnic minority earn at least 10% less than the comparable white group
National equality panel (2010) - showed that white British households had an average wealth of £221,000 compared to Bangladeshi households with only £15,000
work and employment
work + employment can also act as a form of ethnic inequality through ethnic minorities disadvantaged chance in the workplace
-
Wood et al (2009) - found discrimination in favour of white names over equivalent applications from candidates of ethnic minority groups was 29%
Davidson (1997) - used the term 'concrete ceiling' to describe the embedded discrimination that prevents ethnic minority women being promoted - white women have the opportunity to break through the 'glass ceiling'
life chances
one way ethnic inequality is evident is through life chances. There is evidence a persons ethnicity can either reduce or extend their life chances
mental health foundation (2021) - found that black people are 4 times more likely to be detained under the mental health act than white people
-
DFE (2021) - found at A-level, 20% of white students attain 3A's compared to 12% of black students (the lowest performing group)
