MARY I - ROYAL AUTHORITY
MINISTERS AND COUNCILS
THE PRIVY COUNCIL
-
-
formed of a mix of Catholic noblemen and moderate members of Northumberland's council - NEEDED LOYAL BUT ALSO CAPABLE MINISTERS
THE 'INNER COUNCIL'
Mary worked with a smaller group of councillors late in her reign such as Spanish Ambassador Simon Renard
By the end of her reign Mary's relationship with her ministers had deteriorated as she met with fewer councillors (esp. Renard)
-
MARY AS QUEEN
-
-
unlike EVI, Mary would be personally involved in the running of the country
HOWEVER - people didn't trust Mary's authority as queen to overcome her powerlessness as a women and a foreign power (Phillip II) influencing affairs
-
CONCLUSIONS
despite the 'weakness' of her sex, Mary initially established royal authority personally, through her reversal of the LJG devyse - however, her bloated Privy Council and lack of political leadership meant that the trust in her waned as her reign progressed
The Spanish marriage undermined some of the trust that Mary had built up with her ministers, as her relationship with Simon Renard began to anger some in the Privy Council
