Social stratification is a new definition to describe the system of social standings for me. I would just say social class or something of that nature.
The comparison to geology and how people have layers like rocks was a nice comparison because I never would have thought it to be some type of layers when it comes to this
Macklemore’s song ‘Thrift Shop’ is probably one of my favorite comparisons of all time in this chapter. It seems like that song made thrifting ‘cool’ to the younger crowd when it was already cool. The song also makes me chuckle.
The fact that the Caste System was officially dismantled, it is amazing to me that it is still embedded. People should be able to choose what they want to do with their life and who they want to do life with.
The workplace hidden rules that I have noticed, are learned from observation. If I see multiple people doing something, I am more inclined to do it too. If it is wrong, then I can blame it on the lack of knowledge of what I was supposed to do.
Managers do not usually mention unwritten rules until they see one of their employees doing that said rule
Religion is something is something that is celebrated in this country I feel, unless it is not socially popular. It is something that a lot of people are sensitive about

The breakdown of different sects was informative. I was not aware of the technical terms for sects because that was something that just never caught my attention in that way. I have always been curious about other religions

One thing my parents did for me was ensure that I would be attending the best public schools in our area. They pulled multiple strings to get me to my middle and high school. Even after they separated, my dad moved to near my future high school so I could go there and they agreed when I was an infant that I would attend this high school no matter what.
My mother was definitely mentioned in this video and growing up, I thought that it was normal to have a busy schedule and a mom so involved in my activities until I grew up and realized how that is not the case.
I am glad that they mentioned that a lot of the working class does not always have access to fresh food and the same education. It is not all about laziness, it is genuinely about having access and resources.
Money does talk and rule the world. Whether we want to admit it or not, money does make the world go round and that is not even being superficial or materialistic.
Being black, at times it is automatic judgement. Whether it come from a name, how we dress, where we went to school, etc. It is one of the reasons why my mom named me Savannah because she knew that my name would be judged when I became an adult when it came to jobs.
Now, I actually agree with her. He should not press religion on someone like that. I appreciate her fairness. Religion is something important to people but pushing it onto someone is not fair at all.
It is unfortunate that still in this day and age, people are still being judged by their looks and size. We should be judged on things that we actually have control over for the most part and it is character and morals.
I am glad for those progressive places that have laws in place to protect those who are discriminated against
Someone losing weight should not be the main reason someone gains more opportunities in the workplace. It really should be on skill. It shows that their is some vanity in the workplace. If someone does not look aesthetically pleasing for a position, then opportunities won't come around in some cases.

Language barriers are a major thing when it comes to the workplace. Things can easily become lost in translation. I always feel a bit guilty for not knowing Spanish whenever I come across Spanish speakers at my job and they do not speak English. I even have them write down what they need or I use a real time translator. Effort is breaking down the language barrier is important as well.
