increasing grain prices due to poor 1550s harvests
expensive foreign wars

Repealed Sheep Tax 1550
Poor Law 1552
new Treason Act 1550 - law and order
FOREIGN RELATIONS

Northumberland was willing to sacrifice influence in Scotland to be civil with France - FOCUS ON DOMESTIC ISSUES
Treaty of Boulogne 1550 - gave Boulogne back to France in exchange for pension and peace
Henri II daughter and EVI marriage alliance
CONCLUSIONS
Northumberland's pull-back in France and Scotland along with his economic policies of stabilisation, provided relative stability and security in the kingdom and the Privy Council
However, Northumberland's authority diminished as EVI grew ill and the Lady Jane Grey 'devyse' tarnished his reputation - public valued the succession over the religion of the country
BACKGROUND
Northumberland named himself 'Lord President of the Privy Council' rather than 'Lord Protector' as Somerset had been - working with the Privy Council rather than trying to divide them - departure from monarchical style of reign
Lady Jane Grey devyse - Edward VI attempted to pass over HVIII's will to put the Protestant LJG on the throne
by 1553, 24% of wills in Yorkshire made bequeaths to the church, was over 70% in 1547
