Scenario 1
the translanguaging takes place at home and school.
The sole language of instruction at the school is English however the imigrant learners discuss what they have learnt in Spanish to aid in understanding.
Beatriz speaks English and Spanish at home amongst her friends in the community.
the learners communicate in English and Spanish.
The learner in the scenario 1 is a first grader so she is very young. The learner practices the language through reading activities.
The student uses different happenings in her everyday life as an opportunity to practice and improve her English as well as helping her Spanish speaking friends who weren't as familiar with English as she was. she does the same by encouraging her English speaking peers to learn Spanish and teaches them where she can/gets the opportunity
Students trans language as a result of having to adapt to a new lifestyle and a new language at school due to immigration
Scenario 2
The learners in this scenario are from university so they are a lot older. They practice their language through diaries, interviews and questionnaires.
the translanguaging takes place at a University, the University of Limpopo
The medium of instruction is both English and Sepedi. Students are encouraged to use both written and spoken languages
The language in the community is only Sepedi speaking.
the learners communicate in English and Sepedi.
The university students are already quite fluent in both languages and trans language between Sepedi and English. Their studies are intensive and do deeper study and research in private speech (Vygotsky's theory)
These university students CHOOSE to trans language and partake in a bilingual program as a method of self-improvement and after school study. They do research and partake in physical research projects in order to understand what they are studying.
